As with most threats on the Net, you can help keep yourself safe by taking basic precautions. So here are some useful tips to keep away from instant message viruses
1). Be cautious with links & files in IM:
Never click a link or open, accept, or download a file in IM from somebody you don't know. If the link or file is in an IM from somebody you do know, don't click the link or open the file unless you know what the link or file is & you were expecting it. Contact the sender by e-mail, phone, or some other technique to confirm that what they sent was not a virus.
2). Update your Windows application:
Visit Microsoft Update to scan your computer & install any high-priority updates that are offered to you. In case you use automatic updating, the updates are delivered to you when they are released, but you need to make sure you install them.
3). Make sure you are using an updated version of your IM application:
Using the most up-to-date version of your IM application can better protect your computer against viruses & adware. It can block attachments that might contain malware & permit you to scan attachments for viruses.
4). Use antivirus application & keep it updated:
Antivirus application can help to detect & remove IM viruses from your computer, but only in case you keep the antivirus application current. If you have bought a subscription from an antivirus application company, your antivirus application may update itself when you are connected to the Net.
5). Use antispyware application & keep it updated:
Some IM viruses may install adware or other undesirable application on your computer. Antispyware application can help to protect your computer from adware & remove any adware you may already have. In case you don't have antispyware application, you can download Windows Defender. Windows Defender comes with Windows Vista. In case you use Windows XP SP2, you can download Windows Defender for no charge.
