Password Cracking Tutorial

What is RainbowCrack & Rainbow Tables?

RainbowCrack is a general propose implementation of Philippe Oechslin’s faster time-memory trade-off technique.

In 1980 Martin Hellman described a cryptanalytic time-memory trade-off which reduces the time of cryptanalysis by using precalculated data stored in memory. This technique was improved by Rivest before 1982 with the introduction of distinguished points which drastically reduces the number of memory lookups during cryptanalysis. This improved technique has been studied extensively but no new optimisations have been published ever since.

You can find the official Rainbowcrack project here, where you can download the latest version of Rainbowcrack.

In short, the RainbowCrack tool is a hash cracker. A traditional brute force cracker try all possible plaintexts one by one in cracking time. It is time consuming to break complex password in this way. The idea of time-memory trade-off is to do all cracking time computation in advance and store the result in files so called “rainbow table”.

Basically these types of password crackers are working with pre-calculated hashes of ALL passwords available within a certain character space, be that a-z or a-zA-z or a-zA-Z0-9 etc.

These files are called Rainbow Tables.

You are trading speed for memory and disk space, the Rainbow Tables can be VERY large.

Be warned though, Rainbow tables can be defeated by salted hashes, if the hashes are not salted however and you have the correct table, a complex password can be cracked in a few minutes rather than a few weeks or months with traditional brute forcing techniques.

So where do I get these Rainbow Tables?

You can generate them yourself with RainbowCrack, this will take a long time, and a lot of diskspace.

Project Shmoo is offering downloads of popular Rainbow Tables via BitTorrent.

http://rainbowtables.shmoo.com/

If you wanted to, you could even buy the tables from http://www.rainbowtables.net/.

Or these guys, not free but cheap http://www.rainbowcrack-online.com/

Some free tables here http://wired.s6n.com/files/jathias/index.html

What software is available for use with Rainbow Tables?

There is of course the original RainbowCrack as mentioned above.

Then there is:

Ophcrack

Ophcrack is a Windows password cracker based on a time-memory trade-off using rainbow tables. This is a new variant of Hellman’s original trade-off, with better performance.

Cain and Abel (newly added support for Rainbow Tables)

Cain & Abel is a password recovery tool for Microsoft Operating Systems. It allows easy recovery of various kind of passwords by sniffing the network, cracking encrypted passwords using Dictionary, Brute-Force and Cryptanalysis attacks, recording VoIP conversations, decoding scrambled passwords, revealing password boxes, uncovering cached passwords and analyzing routing protocols.

Cain and Abel is personally my favourite fully featured password whacking tool, it also has a good packet sniffer, which grabs and decodes passwords and many methods for password cracking. The interface is decent too. I’ll write more on how to get the most out of Cain later.

L0phtcrack or LC5

LC5 is the latest version of L0phtCrack, the award-winning password auditing and recovery application used by thousands of companies worldwide.

Please note this is a COMMERCIAL product.

LCP

Main purpose of LCP program is user account passwords auditing and recovery in Windows NT/2000/XP/2003

Thankfully there is a freeware alternative to LC5 in the form of LCP.

All About Google Flight Search

Google has just launched their new Flight Search feature that helps you explore air travel options to plan trips.
Google has made what amounts to a promising down payment on more ambitious travel search tools with its new Flight Search, debuting today. Launching initially for a select group of US cities Google users will have access to an expanded range of airline search options and a much more verticalized experience than has been available in the past on Google.
This is the first product to emerge from Google’s controversial acquisition of travel software company ITA, which closed in April and included concessions and guarantees to existing ITA customers such as Kayak, Microsoft, Orbitz, Hotwire and TripAdvisor. The past five months have been spent on integration of the ITA team and technology in Boston.

google-flight

Once an outbound and return flight are selected — there are no one-way or multi-city capabilities right now — users are taken to an airline website to book. The content presented in Flight Search results is all organic. However, as the image below indicates, the booking link is or could be an ad. According to Google this is the only advertising in Flight Search.
Google said it’s still experimenting with the model. It’s not entirely clear what would happen if the selected airline were not an advertiser. Are only advertiser flights being included in the data presented? I assume not. However when most travel sites such as Kayak or Orbitz deliver a user to an airline or hotel site there’s lead-gen fee or bounty paid. And Google may have struck agreements with all the major carriers accordingly.
At the moment, Google Flights is limited, though useful tool, but one can only assume Google will grow the service into a unique product at some point in the future. Check out Google’s introductory video below.

Download Compete Website on Your PC - Windows Version

When you discover an interesting website and want to copy a complete website to view it locally without internet connection. If in hurry, you can backup entire website on USB drive and view it afterward. Can be useful even if you want to save thousands of images from a webpage in one click.

HTTrack is a tool to save all the webpages from a specified website. The website downloaded when viewed offline looks exactly as it appears online. An exact mirror of the website is downloaded on your HardDisk with all the styles, background images and alignments keeping intact. The links pointing out of the page are also taken into consideration means those pages are also downloaded. For example: You have to download all the MP3 songs, Flash, videos or only some of them using Filters from a website all at once then WinHTTrack is a feasible option.

The sites downloaded can be used in your regular browser and there are no waiting times to load another page as all the pages are already stored offline in your Local Disk. Moreover, no active Internet connection required to access it. Personally, I used it to show  research pages of my Project to the concerned professor where internet connectivity was poor.

How to download complete website?

Enter Project name and Category (It can be anything according to the site you are downloading). Next the Base Path where the site will be downloaded.

More than one URL can be entered to be downloaded. Specify them in the box. You can specify filters to download specific extension of files like MP3, JPG or PNG from Set Options buttons.

Then Press Finish to start copying. You can prefer to shutdown PC after downloading is completed  as it may take few minutes depending upon the size of files hosted on site.

Now, to view the downloaded website go to the output folder and click on index.html file (general name) or open the HTTrack Website copier program and click Browse Sites from File menu.

Secure Your Facebook Account to Next Level

Step 1: Go to Account Settings and Enable Notifications

When you’re logged into Facebook, you’ll see the word “Account” in the top right corner of the browser window. Click there to get a drop-down menu of options, then click on “Account Settings,” as pictured below.
You’ll end up looking at a page that lists ways you can customize your account, including “Name,” “Password,” “Linked Accounts” and “more.” As long as you don’t navigate away from the “Settings” tab, you’ll see “Account Security” close to the bottom of the list. Click “change” on the right to show the following option:

Check “Yes” when you see the prompt, “Would you like to receive notifications for logins from new devices?” Then click “Save.” The feature is turned on. Now we’ll show you how to use it.

Step 2: Log In and Register Your Computer

The settings won’t be customizable until you register the computer you’re logged in with, so you’ll have to first log out and then log back in. You can do this from the “Accounts” button in the top-right corner, as we mentioned before. When you log in again, you’ll see a screen titled “Register this computer.”
Type the name of the computer in (it can be anything you want as long as it’s something you’ll recognize and remember), and choose whether you want Facebook to remember this computer or not.
Facebook suggests a good rule of thumb: If the computer is a public one (like one you’d use at a library, a shared work computer or a machine in your school’s computer lab), leave the box unchecked so it will have to be registered each time a new login occurs, leading to an e-mail or text notification.
If it’s a machine you use every day, then go ahead and check the box; you probably don’t want to receive an email every time you log into Facebook from a safe place!
Now that your computer is registered, you can see more options when you revisit the “Account Settings” page where you first enabled the notifications. You’ll see a history of registrations; it won’t record every time you log into a computer that’s already registered, but it will record every new registration, which should include at least the first time any tricker logs in.
You can check or uncheck the option to have the immediate notifications sent to your cell phone via text message in addition to the basic email option.
